In the past couple of weeks, we have posted two tutorials for perdigons which my Fly Fishing Team USA mates and I used during the World Fly Fishing Championships in Spain this year.
The first tutorial was for the Simple Olive Perdigon from my teammate Cody Burgdorff. As the name suggests, it's a really easy and quick olive perdigon which works well as a small mayfly nymph when fish prefer a drab imitative color scheme.
The recipe is:
Hook: Dohiku 303 sizes 14-18. In other hooks this would be sizes 16-20.
Bead: Tactical Fly Fisher Slotted Tungsten or Inverting Tungsten bead in black nickel or copper
Tail: Coq de Leon
Body and Thread: Veevus Body Quill in light olive
Wingcase: black UVCraft resin
Resin: clear UVCraft resin
The second tutorial was for the Penny Perdigon. This is a perdigon that my teammate Pat Weiss started fishing back in 2014. It has a copper colored flashy body that catches the eyes of trout well in the drift. I've had quite a bit of success with it at home since returning from Spain as well. In the tutorial, I show one trick I've worked on to improve the durability and adhesion of the resin to smooth bodied perdigons. The Penny Perdigon will also be available commercially in 2023 through Fulling Mill and we will have it in our store.
The recipe is:
Hook: Dohiku 303 sizes 14-18. In other hooks this would be sizes 16-20.

Happy tying and fishing everyone,
Devin
