Tying a dropper tag with the Figure of 8 Knot

Tying a dropper tag with the Figure of 8 Knot

Hello everyone,
I hope you've had a festive holiday season and that 2024 is looking to be a fishy and happy year for you.

Last week I published a video on making a dropper tag with a Figure 8 Knot. Whether you are making a dropper tag or just joining tippet, this knot has become my favorite for its strength and ease of tying.

Our former shop manager Kramer Bookman started using this knot after having several frustrating days where his tippet broke at his dropper tag knot when fighting large fish. He started looking for a stronger knot and came across the Figure of 8 Knot. This knot is also called the Orvis Tippet Knot and the Lefty Kreh Tippet Knot. He did some initial head to head testing and the Triple Surgeon's knot broke before the Figure of 8 Knot 12 times in a row.

Given Kramer's results, I started using the Figure of 8 Knot for my own dropper tags and found it to be stronger as well. It took me a few trips to find the easiest and quickest way to tie it, but I now find it not only to be the strongest tippet knot I've used but also the quickest to tie. I hope you'll give it a try and that it helps you out on the water.

Happy Fishing,
Devin
