Tying the Fluorescent Surprise Perdigon

Tying the Fluorescent Surprise Perdigon

In a previous YouTube video, I talked about why I believe the addition of fluorescent materials to your flies can help them fish better. Drawing on two of my favorite books on the subject, I explained some of the science of light attenuation and color shifts that happen when light penetrates water. Those characteristics of light can help set our flies apart from the surrounding items in the drift when colors fluoresce due to exposure to higher energy UV light.

Most folks think of fluorescent materials with regard to hotspots. They envision a fluorescent orange, pink, or chartreuse tag or collar being added to a fly. I certainly use those types of fluorescent additions to my flies as well but these days there are materials that provide other options as well.

In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to tie what has become one of my favorite patterns over the last year, the Fluorescent Surprise Perdigon. I also tie a bonus pattern that is its derivative, the Fluorescent Surprise Midge Pupa. Both of these patterns seem drab at first glance, and they are realistic imitations of a small mayfly larva or midge pupa. However, the drab thread glows with fluorescence under UV light and helps these flies stand out underwater so that trout are more likely to see them amid everything else in the drift.
