Hello everyone,
A while back I had the opportunity to be a judge for our warehouse manager Justin Hart in a Fly Fishing Team USA qualifying competition. I had drawn the same beat in the session before and then Justin fished the beat after me. It was a tough beat with only one main run that held fish on a gradual corner. As a judge, I wasn't allowed to offer any advice during the session, but after the session I described to Justin how I fished my session and how I felt he could have fished his differently. The main sticking point was a simple issue; I told him I thought he should have covered the main run from the other side of the river.
The obvious question is why did it matter which side of the river Justin fished from? The answer to that question is the subject of our latest YouTube video. In the video Justin filmed me fishing a few locations with a drone. I then used diagrams to illustrate the flow of the currents and why I picked a certain side of the river. To fish each location, I stood where I felt the natural curvature of my drift would fit the curvature of the currents. Hopefully the video will provoke some thought as to where you should stand the next time you fish a particular piece of holding water on a river you can cross.
After you've watched the video, please head on over to our fly shop at tacticalflyfisher.com. Thank you for being a Tactical Fly Fisher customer. We hope you are out enjoying some fine fall fishing.
