I just posted another YouTube video on our channel. This video is a bit of a follow up to a video I posted 4 years ago called 5 Steps to Landing More Fish. Over the last year or so I've been paying attention to a lot of anglers as they net fish. Even some fairly high-level anglers I have watched have struggled to make the final netting motion that slides a fish smoothly and efficiently into their net.
In my observations, one main reason anglers struggle to net fish is because they have too little or too much line out of their rod as they make the final netting motion. Not only does this make it hard to get a fish in the net but it is a common reason for breaking a rod. In this video, I cover how to know when you have the "Goldilocks" amount of line out of your rod tip and show how finding that "Goldilocks" length of line can make a big difference in how easily you can net a fish. It may even save you from breaking a rod. This same strategy will work with any length of rod as long as you adjust the amount of line out your rod tip accordingly. I've used it successfully with rods from 7.5' long all the way to 13' Spey rods.
